EDIT: Is my new icon causing seizures? I got one complaint that it was.

After five years I finally decided to change my icon to something a little more relevant. Normally I hesitate to change icons, since I know for me at least that's how I identify some artists on DA, but I was tired of my old icon showing off art I did in 2004... so for now it's all about THE COLORS DUKE THE COLORS. If you get that reference, awesome.

I am having a hard time dealing with this new print company I'm probably going to use. They sent me a sample of their stickers and they are really high quality, and they are the cheapest place I could find who do pretty much everything I want them to do for the comic convention in May. The only problem is, they aren't like the nice printers who did my business cards (they are, unfortunately, a little expensive and don't offer much for stickers or book printing). They don't offer templates-- what they call a template is also usually just a really bad walk-through. Their website doesn't even state everything they need from me (like... they failed to mention CROP LINES...). It reminds me of those really old computer games where you type in "walk to the left" and the character walks left, then you say "Open refrigerator" and it responds with "Cannot compute", because you have to say "put hand on refrigerator handle" before you can tell it to open the door. This print company is like that pixel-tard. They asked me to specify a cutting path, and I did but I forgot to delete an empty path layer that I had open. It was totally blank, and didn't even have a name, just "new path layer". But the printers emailed me and said "DO OVER-- THERE IS AN EXTRA LAYER -- PANIC." So I have to go in, delete the layer, and then upload the image and wait for them to check it again. Can someone over there not go "Oh, this layer is blank. I should call this Brooke girl and see if I can just delete it and work with what she sent me."

ARGH. These better be the best damn stickers ever. Of course, the plus side is that once the problem is solved I'll know what to do in the future, but still. Leading up to it is giving me a headache.

Oh, and to everyone lately who has been trying to pick a fight with me... cut me a break. I'm really stressed out. I'm sorry if I mistook something viciously mean you said to be a joke, I'm sorry if I don't think Fairy Tail is the greatest manga ever, I'm sorry if your doodle on notebook paper didn't get accepted to a group I help out with... and I'm especially sorry if you don't believe me when I say I live in Japan and have worked with professional mangaka and such. It's really not something to brag about, and I'm not bragging, but I don't just know the difference between a Maru pen and a G pen because OMG BAKUMAN YAYS. I think the only thing that pissed me off this week was being told I'm a liar. I'm not 11, I don't run around online making up new identities for myself.

I'm sure in two weeks, when this work event is over, I'll be in a better mood because by then my new comic will be finished and ready to take to publishers, I can go back to planning my wedding, and I can finally FINALLY take on assistant jobs again. But for now, ugh.

And to the winners of my art contest: I'll start working on your gift pics probably in early April. I think I told you guys that before, but it's just a reminder.

- Your icon hasn't, as of yet, been seizure inducing. And it helps me spot you more easily in my message center, so huzzah for the eye catching factor.

- I'm sorry sucky people sucked up your week. Hope when things get less stressful for ya, their spazzyness can be more easily chalked up to the ridiculousness that it is.

- And whee, looking forward to those stickers!

The week has actually gotten progressively better, until last night when my dog peed on my head. I wish that was a joke, but...

I think stickers and postcards will come in this weekend, so that's exciting :D And the postcard place is kind of awesome because I initially ordered 100 and they said "Hey, it's the same price for 200... want 200??" So because of that, I can sell the postcards for really cheap, which is nice.

So again, minus the dog piss in hair thing from last night, the week has gotten better.

LOL. I'm sorry. I feel for ya - sincerely.

My friend's family has a load of pets, my favorite of which had been a VERY old cat named KC. KC's hair had thinned out in a lot of places, he sounded like a broken music box when meowing, and we're pretty sure he had some kind of kitty dementia. But I loooooved him. I'll never forget this one time when he wandered over to a group of us on the couch. The much younger cat and two cute dogs were getting all the love, so I scooped him up for a cuddle.

And he puked on me. I swear he smiled just before doing it, too.

Oh god! Cats and their puking... we're considering getting a cat companion for our dog, but I'm worried about all the puking XD

You know, if things go down the drain, you could consider other options - occidental publishers. I know, its not glamour but...

Also, the worlds of comics arent just japanese and related styles vs american and such - there is then the third option - Europe, franco-belgian BD and all. If then american guys like Dark Horse wouldnt be it, a franco-belgian thing by example would be maybe more like it. There is native mangaesque works and the general more consideration for comics attitude in this area.

MOST people I've met who are clearly inspired by Japanese comics are Europeans. Most foreigners I've met who want to be mangaka here are, again, European. If I ever go to France or Germany I want to check out one of their comic conventions, because their artists seem to be a bit more superior to American artists. I actually have very little experience with European comics-- I know about Tin-Tin but I've never read the original series, though I hear it's really well done.

I'm already starting to experiment a little in indies publishing as a second option, and as long as I can make a living (even if it's a measly one) I don't mind having to do self-publishing or whatever. Glamour-shmamor, I just want to have a roof over my head, food on the table, and art projects.

Oh yes, the Franco-Belgian School as it is called and other national comics are a total 'third way' and there is some high quality comic artists there (it is to note that as a quebecker, I was in contact with 'la bédé' since my youngest days)....

Tintin by example was made by Hergé - kinda 'old' now, but a 'sacred monster' of european comics, on the level of Disney and Tezuka; his 'ligne claire' style influenced a lot of artists.... Other big names are Franklin with his humoristic edge and later cynical darker works, and Moebius, a man who was famous for artistic masterpieces like Arzak the Warrior and Blueberry the cajun cowboy and who ahve international works and fame.

If ever interested, search some, maybe you will find inspiration in la bédé.. :)

As for possible editors, there is franco-belgian ones by example open for up and coming artists, manga-influenced or not, like Glénat, Dupuis, Dargaud, etc... A local artist by example is working with Régis Loiselle (a noted bédéiste) for a serie based on countryside life in Québec about a century ago (I think) - Magasin Général.

I really should do research on European comics. I find it so strange that despite having attended two schools for comics, I've never had to study foreign comic artists.
