Okay... okay. I'm done being emo about my disastrous editor meetings.
New plan: I'm redoing Half & Half (the story I took in for review) as a rough neemu (thumbnails, storyboard, etc) and using five of my favorite pages that got lots of praise from editors (I did have two or three of those) to show with my roughs so editors can see how I can draw. I'll also be touching up and adding to some of the pages and make adjustments as I see fit. I'll do this over the weekend, so at the very least I'll be posting those five pages I really liked sometime this weekend.
I'm also taking in a rough re-write neemu of Samurai Rodeo. Remember that story? I did it a year ago and nearly got it published over at Shounen Magazine, where I was previously at. It hit me like a ton of bricks how I could improve the story-- I'm completely reworking the main male protagonist so instead of being a delinquent asshole with a heart of gold, he's instead going to be a really lousy kendo player with glasses and is known around school as a loser who gives up early (at kendo matches, at studying, at everything), and Sandy will basically be pushing him to do things he's never tried, and to believe in himself. It's also going to be about ten pages shorter... if you haven't read it, there's an English version in my scraps. I'll be drawing a couple of finished pages to show editors I can draw both fantasy and modern-day backgrounds.
If I don't get any work as a mangaka, I'm hoping they will at least see potential and flexibility in me. I also hope, if nothing else, the buildings and forest backgrounds will show I can do a variety of backgrounds and get me full-time assistant work for a weekly publication so I can QUIT MY OFFICE JOB. If I'm not good enough to be a mangaka, I want to GET good enough, and being a full-time (instead of part time, as I am now) assistant is the way to go.
I'm going to go for the mainstream boys magazines, and stick with them. I wanted to avoid it, but I'm going to go to Jump... mostly because I want to work for Takeshi Obata like you wouldn't believe. If that is a complete failure, I'll go to Shounen Sunday. If that fails, I'll try GanGan. Finally, if THAT fails, I'll go back to my old editor. If THAT fails, well, I used to so a series called Oddimals that was fairly popular online 15 years ago when the net was a youngling... I might try my hand at little kid's manga by reviving them. I've got a Plan A through Plan D, so hopefully I can get SOMETHING by the end of the year. That's my big goal... I want to quit my office job before 2011.
I also want to thank everyone who commented on my last journal. It really helps me to know that people are rooting for me, and that I'm not just wasting my time. Because I definitely didn't leave my family, friends, and home country just to come to Japan and waste time! I want to move forward, keep going, and not get caught up in my own failures and lose sight of the possibilities, as dim as they may be.
So yeah, you guys are awesome. You're my fuel, and one of the only things keeping me on track. I love DA.

Wow. I've also wanted to do be a mangaka for Shonen Jump. But then I realized that it'd be better if I start my own publishing company one day. But before I do that, I'm studying for Diploma right now.
My sensei once told me about what you've experienced. He did advice me to start making doujin manga before going for the publishers or editors. All I know from what I've learned at an academy in Malaysia, some lecturers wanted to do comics but every time they show their works to the editors, they either get rejected or the editor was just being too picky...
But as long as theres a will, theres a way. Have you tried doing doujin manga? A friend of mine from Tokyo said that you can sell doujin manga in Akihabara. Even if I'm aiming to becoming a professional mangaka, I want to start with something small (doing doujin). One day, my doujin circle, AKABUMI, will be Kabushiki Gaisha.
At the moment, I'm working on a simple doujin manga (I might submit a sample here in DA soon). And I'm also planning a simple anime video (which I might upload on youtube someday but not now). I need to plan things one at a time while I'm studying. Not to mention revision for JLPT.
負けずに頑張ってね。
By the way, being a professional mangaka in Tokyo is not the only dream or goal I have. If you ask me, I'll be glad to tell you about them. ^__^
Everyone wants to be a mangaka for Shounen Jump, haha. That's why I never wanted to try for it. I don't seriously think they'll take me in, but I am going to go there for assistant work.
I'm not sure that doujin manga is the way to get published. It worked for a guy I know who does porn, but other than that most doujin mangaka are more happy in the indies market. You can make a really good living off doujin if you're really good. I've never tried doujin, that's more of an "if I fail" option. I'd much rather work with an editor.
Wait... why would your doujin circle become a corporation? I'm not sure I've ever heard of that happening before.
Well, I've already lost a bunch, but yeah, I'll keep trying
Are you in Tokyo now or in Malaysia?
Yeah. I guess that's why I've sort of changed my mind about wanting to be a mangaka for Shonen Jump. As a matter of fact, in Jump Square there's a manga series under collaboration between Takei Hiroyuki and Stan Lee titled ULTIMO. Wanted to go for Jump Square but... I might think about it someday.
It doesn't matter. As for me, I'd have to start somewhere anyway. Being a doujinshika means I can have my own creativity... without anyone controlling it. heh heh. Mangakas like CLAMP, Monkey Punch, Akamatsu Ken and Azuma Kiyohiko started out by doing doujin manga before they've become famous mangaka.
Ever heard of Type-Moon? I remember reading somewhere that it used to be doujin. HAHA. Porn (or H Manga/Ero Manga) might be something common in Doujin but as for me, I'd do something original. But then again, I CAN do Ero stuffs under a different penname/pseudonym and under a different circle. heh heh ehhh...
I'm studying in Malaysia at the moment and I'm studying at a college called The One Academy of Communication and Design (The One Academy or TOA for short). Recently, I've met some people from the Japanese community. I have a friend who is from Tokyo who is also studying here in Malaysia. He told me stuffs and the things I want/need to know about Tokyo. His brother knows about me but I still don't know about him yet. But after receiving the manga books he gave me, I really want to meet him.
Oh yeah. Whatever you do, if things don't go well, there are alternate routes. So don't give up. I'm also striving for my dreams. ^__^
I pretty much steer clear of all doujinshi, so I don't really know any of the artists or circles, even the famous ones. I know about Urushihara Satoshi and that's pretty much it.
Ah, I see. Well, good luck to you too
I know you're aiming to get your work published in a magazine but try and have a look at other doujin artists or circles. Oh you know Urushihara Satoshi. Yeah. He's got nice illustrations. Especially the female characters he did. ^____^
Thank you. And to you too.
