I Got A Job In Manga!

I Got A Job In Manga!

....translations. Ho ho, did I fool you?

I got scouted recently and was asked to send a sample translation for official manga English translations, and I am officially starting that on July 3rd. I'm pretty psyched, because this is definitely a job I will be good at and one I've been hoping to do for a while now. I can't say just yet what titles I will be working on, and I don't know when I will be able to say anything (maybe when they go on sale?), but this is pretty exciting for me, since I am going to get paid to read manga and I have spent many years making fun of English translations, so now I have a chance to do what I deem a proper translation for some lucky title. Plus, this is going to really bump my Japanese even higher, since I'll be forced to read and learn Japanese I don't use in my everyday life (for example, the sample chapter I had to translate was set in the Han Dynasty during an epic war, so lots of new terms cropped up there). Once I know what series I'll be working on and know when titles will be available, I'll let everyone know.

My old job also begged me to come back and work for them through the first of October, and I said I would only agree if they gave me a huge pay increase. They were so desperate they said "Not a problem" and now I'm getting paid $15 an hour to do pretty much nothing for a few months. I will be updating my FaLLEN novel a bit more frequently, and I will post updates here since this is the first year I am really going to start actively campaigning for my series, especially since a friend just informed me that there is an Australian book series (see: Twilight knock-off) called the Fallen Books, and that kind of bugs me. I've been using the title longer! I will likely be trademarking my title this year, once I get the books out. Fortunately you can't copyright a single word...

All this work means something's gotta go-- I will no longer be doing the personal shopper service after July 3rd. If you get orders in before then I will be happy to ship items to you, but after that I'm going to close that page at least until October. Thanks to everyone who ordered through me... the post office knows me on a first-name basis now, haha.

Right now I'm doing a special on character-related chopsticks! Below are a few examples:

<img src="[link]" width="200"  alt="Star Wars light sabers!"> <img src="[link]" width="200"  ALT="Harry Potter's wand!"> Creamy Mami's wand!

Basara's Masamune's katana! Asuka L. Soryuu's EVA plug! One Piece sticks and case!

  • Star Wars lightsaber chopsticks
  • Harry Potter character wand-shaped chopsticks
  • Magical Girl vintage series magic scepter chopsticks
  • Basara character katana-shaped chopsticks
  • Evangelion EVA entry plugs-- with tiny character in plug suit!
  • One Piece chopsticks-- includes case!
  • ....and more!!

Many of these are a series and include other characters. I've seen most of these in person and they are pretty amazing with the details-- I bought an entry plug pair for Mari from Evangelion and I love them to death!

Just note me with any questions or for specifics.

Working on prize art still. I'm still not used to the style I use for the art, so it takes me FOREVER to get anything done.

I saw your posts on the LJ artists_beware community and then clicked through to your DA. I was kind of surprised to read you were selling stuff at Japanese conventions! Did you live in Japan already for a translating job and then, because you also draw a lot, decided to start selling things at cons?

Oh hi :D

I came to Japan almost seven years ago to study at a school that had a manga major, and I just kind of stuck around, haha. I kind of avoided doing events for a long time for various reasons, but then this summer I decided to give it a try. I really wish I'd done this sooner!

I kind of want to try selling at an American con eventually... Too bad my hometown isn't known for any particularly large anime conventions.

Interesting! Did you apply directly to that school in Japan, or did you go through an American school?
When I was in high school in Japan, we also went to a "study event" (where many colleges and universities in Kansai presented themselves, there were stands for a lot of different studies). There also was a manga drawing school, which sounded very interesting, but I was told it was very hard to get in (but it didn't matter for me as I went to university in the Netherlands anyway). If it's something similar to what you did, it sounded like a nice study!

Aren't there any conventions in a nearby larger town in America where you could go to?
But if you are going to sell at American cons, maybe you have to make English versions of your manga as well...? (though you can probably put the Japanese versions on the table as well, as there most likely are people visiting those conventions who can read Japanese too)

I applied directly after quitting college to enroll in a language school in Tokyo. The manga school was a total waste of money... Some schools are okay, but Japanese school systems are a joke. I never got any feedback and wasn't challenged too often. When I graduated I was not prepared for finding work!

There are some conventions in that are a six hour drive from my hometown, but nothing much closer than that! I might go to a Chicago event, though. And yeah, I will have to have Enlish versions made up, haha.

Where are you from? Japan or the Netherlands?

(I see I didn't answer you yet, sorry!)

I'm from the Netherlands, but I've been to high school in Japan (one year only though, 高2).

You are so lucky! I wanted so badly to go to high school for a semester in Japan, but my parents said no. I wanted to wear a seifuku and learn Japanese, heh.

But you're lucky because you got a job in manga, I think :) You still had a chance to go to Japan, even though it was after high school.

Thank you so much! I've also got that art book coming out, with your art featured of course ;) With all that's going on, I don't have much time to do anything I want to do though, haha.
