Comitia and Good Comic City Event Reports
How is everyone? Is school in session yet, or are you guys enjoying the last fleeting moments of your summer vacation?
I have been very busy. Oh so very busy. I used to spend hours a day on DA but now I only check it for messages, and I look at the images in my deviation queue but rarely comment on them. I'm not being a very good co-founder at
I quit my manga translation job! That didn't last. The pay wasn't good, which was fine, but I don't like my employer breaking every agreement in the contract. He didn't have his act together, and his name is "Kan" and I have learned not to trust people named "Kan". Ever "Kan" I have ever met (and it is a very rare name, so what are the odds) has cheated me or used me in a big way for profit. The manga I had to translate was all boring as hell, anyway. Nobody will buy it when it goes on sale, and I had the same lame author every single week. If the money was better than pocket change and if I wasn't having to remind my boss every other day that he scheduled me to do this instead of that... Well, anyway, on to the event reports.
COMITIA
This was a good event. I made quite a bit of money and nearly sold out of my bowling manga. I met a lot of neat people and holy cow I have gotten so many job offers! I wish I had gone with a different cover for the art book... it sold all right, but I think if the cover had been better it would have done even better. Most people who picked it up and flipped through it ended up buying it. I didn't sit next to anyone chatty, which was a first, but I had a really great table location and a lot of people liked the bowling manga and said they looked forward to FaLLEN later this year. YESSS. The best part was getting job offers, though. I got so many I actually have to turn a few down. Hopefully the ones I'm having meetings with this week will work out... one is potentially a manga job (holy shit!) and one is another translation job with (hopefully) better terms. This is kind of why I had the balls to quit my translation job... I had to make room for these opportunities.
I will know for sure if I get one of these jobs tomorrow, and I'll post the (somewhat hilarious) details once I know I legally can.
GOOD COMIC CITY
...Was a bust. Sales at Comitia were great, but I made only $15 at Comic City. Comic City allows both fan art and original works, but the people who come are usually women seeking Hetalia and boys love fan comics, neither of which I have. In fact, my two biggest sales were to men... It also kind of hurt my sales that the guy next to me was AMAZING. He was a really nice guy, too. We ended up talking most of the event. I'm sure I caused him a sale or two, haha. I need to ask him what Epson printer he uses specifically because if I can make prints that nice at home I will gladly shell out $150 for a second printer (A3 sized I hope... I need one of those). I thought his prints were done professionally. Really great quality. I also had a really shitty table location at Comic City... way in the back next to a bunch of blank spaces. People barely even walked past us. Next time I will have to sign up earlier than the last possible day.
I really want to draw fan art of Thundercats 2011. The show kind of flip flops between super awesome and super stupid. Please develop Cheetarah's character more! I've waited 20 years for her to have a personality! Actually, I would drop everything if the creators of that show emailed me and said "Oh, Brooke! Please draw a black and white comic version of the new series! And please feel free to add Pumyra and design her anyway you like!" Yeah, that's right. My favorite character is Pumyra, who did jack in the original. I want to draw a comic of the new Cheetarah and Pumyra getting it on. I also want to draw a comic of Hugh Jackman and Paul Rudd getting it on, because now that I'm married I will never have a chance to have sex with them, and if I can't have them I want them to at least have each other. And I normally don't fantasize about men having sex or real people having sex with people not me, so go figure.
Uh... Here is an update about the art book. I'm going to give the contributing artists a chance to get a copy first before I open it up to the rest of you guys, minus the ones who pre-ordered. I'll be noting you guys about that sometime soon. I'll note the contributors after I finish this ridiculously long, meandering post because I've been inactive and have hyperactivity pent up that I need to release all over the place. I even talked to a spambot today at work for fifteen minutes out of boredom. At last, I have a chance to breathe, and this is what I do with my time? For shame.
FaLLEN Art Booklet Now Available!
At long last, the first printing for A Tribute To FaLLEN is now available. It's not 100% perfect because I am still new to book making, but it's still good printing, great art by around 30 artists, and a fair price all things considered. I was originally going to charge $15, but I brought the price down to $12 by cutting out a few pages (my art, no biggie, haha) so... yeah.
Because my camera blows, I decided to film myself flipping through the book in what has to be the worst video ever made. It's three minutes of my forehead, the book, and me fighting with my parakeet. Oh, and the best effects ever. I'm sure Lucasfilms will be knocking at my door tomorrow morning begging me to come work for them.
Here is the amazing video:

sorry to hear about yourjob, but hey lets hope all these offers are awesome ones ^^
You should share your tips and tricks! All I know is "good printer + CMYK" and I'm not sure what "good printer" means! XD
(Completely off topic, but I wanted to thank you for something. A lot of artists get REALLY bitter and bashy when their stuff has trouble selling next to super popular franchises or genres (IE Hetalia and/or Boys Love) when you seem to just roll with it. It's really nice seeing people not blaming the franchise/genre for its own popularity - at least not publicly.)
I think the reason I'm not bitter about Comic City is because in Japan there's Comitia, which is dedicated solely to original manga and is a rather large event. I think it's the second largest comic event, next to Comic Market, but I could be wrong. I think people get bitter because there aren't many places that draw in good crowds for original works only outside of Japan...
I think I would only get bitter if I saw people outselling me and they were selling traces or copies or something. There are a lot of really amazing artists at Comic City, so rather than get upset I just feel like I either need to try my hand at some fan work, or I need to get more competitive and improve my own work! I decided to change the lead character in my next non-FaLLEN story from a normal looking guy to a hot guy just to see if this gives me any extra sales at Comic City. If it doesn't I will probably just stick with original-only events.
