I talked to someone at JUMP about my bowling manga, and it didn't go very well. I'm starting to get the idea that I might not be a very funny comic artist... at least not as funny as I think I am. And I still have a lot of improving to go on my artwork apparently, so I guess I need to whip out the books on perspective...

Since my last three shounen manga stories haven't done so well, I'm going to do a serious, slightly more mature comic called "Jisatsu Soudan", or "Suicide Consultation". The story is about a high school boy whose girlfriend commits suicide, who finds himself haunted by her suicide note, which simply read, "Thank you, Suicide Consultant". The protagonist sets out to find the mysterious Suicide Consultant, and along the way realizes he's paying more attention to his girlfriend now that she's dead than he ever did when she was alive. Maybe he never even knew her at all.

.... the basic premise. It's an idea I came up with in February but had to put on hold because of the bowling story. I'm pretty excited about it, since I can draw teenage characters and not worry about gags and effects as much. I don't have any particular magazine in mind, I'm just going to make it, shop it around, and if no publisher picks it up I'll just sell it as a single comic at doujinshi events.

Which reminds me, Moero! FIRESHOT!! will be available as a single 20 page comic booklet next month, with a full-color version of the title page. It will be somewhere between $3 to $5 (haven't decided yet), but it will be in Japanese only. I'll have it for sale at Comic City and Comitia. If anyone wants to purchase a copy I will probably have information for that sometime early next month.

Okay, big announcement...

A lot of you have asked me recently when I'll be selling the novel version of FaLLEN Book I... and I'm afraid to say that it probably won't happen. Costs are too high to print, and I found out the publisher I was going to use doesn't make very good quality books. I might still do an eBook version, since I just ordered an iPad 2, but it is highly unlikely there will be a print version unless I think I'd sell enough copies. I think realistically only about five of you would buy one ^^; Plus, it's a lot harder to translate into Japanese than a comic, so it would only get an English release and limit my market.

So...

FaLLEN: The Manga is COMING.

Brought out the bold font for that.

After I finish the Jisatsu Soudan short comic I mentioned above, I will FINALLY begin putting together a comic version of FaLLEN for a late fall/ early winter 2011 release. I will make a Japanese version as well as an English version, and it will be released in graphic novel format rather than in individual issues. The first book will be broken down into four graphic novels, and I will of course post samples and free pages for those interested. I'm really excited to finally get this project going, and I hope some of you guys will help support me.

Other announcements... I'll be posting gift art starting next week. For those who have been waiting, I apologize! Lots of unexpected natural disasters and quarter-life crises and weddings just kept getting in the way.

To those of you who bought postcards or stickers, I sent out a batch in the mail today! Let me know when you get them :D

Early next month is my wedding XD

Next month toward the end, sometime after Comic City I should have some free time, though.

In Hawaii. It's in between mainland America and Japan, is fairly Japanese-friendly, etc. Because of that it's going to be a small wedding, but if I did it here nobody on my side of the family would come, and if I did it in Oklahoma absolutely NO ONE from Hero's family would come. Ugh. Weddings are a pain in the ass.

Oh and stress about inlaws and wedding arrangements and what not.
But meh, you`ll be fine.
Hope you have a great time.

To be honest, I was a bit confused why you were trying so hard with comedies too, when I feel like, from the result, your heart isn't really in it - comedy is soo hard to write and even more so when you have the cultural barrier to breach.

This new one sounds really interesting, and of course I approve of you doing a manga for your FaLLEN story - you should be illustrating what you love as well (even if on the side), not only trying to please editors. :D

Thinking about it now, I really don't know why I was pushing it. I think my thoughts were "I got an editor to work with me at Kodansha with a story that had comedy, so maybe I should stick with that". And you're right, my heart wasn't totally into it. Especially the bowling story-- I was proud of how much I'd improved, but the characters and story didn't really mean anything to me, and though it was kind of fun at first I didn't realize some of the jokes didn't make sense in Japanese until after I'd turned it in. And it's kind of embarrassing to be told something you think is funny isn't funny to anyone else.

I think I'm just going to do what I want to do and if that's still not good enough, then I guess I was never meant to be a mangaka. But I think I'd rather draw what I like and only make a little money off of it than to have to draw something I'm not interested in...
