Sokka And Zuko by OgawaBurukku Sokka And Zuko by OgawaBurukku
Not only is this my FINAL COMMISSION from my super huge batch of commissions I took in late summer of 2010, but it's apparently also my 100th deviation! I think my next deviation needs to celebrate that.

This is for my lovely friend :iconirukapuppy:, who wrote a super cute fanficlet where Sokka examines all the scars and such on Zuko's body, slightly jealous that he's not all scarred and cool looking despite the battles he's been in. I was told to make it "Two heterosexual men in questionably gay-ish situation". So rather than draw them covered in sweat and panting and rubbing each other, I went for a more comical take.

Kinda switched back to my old style for this. I need to practice drawing feet.

I've had this pic in the works for like... uh... weeks? I don't even remember where I got the background photo from (some random google search for royalty free pics... so I guess it doesn't matter if I link it or not). I tweaked it quite a bit, though.

Oh, and for the record; I actually kind of liked the movie. The acting was horrible, I have no idea why M. Night didn't push Katara and Sokka's actors harder. I thought Aang was pretty good, and any so-so acting was forgiven because he was seriously amazing with the martial arts in the movie. I thought the visuals were amazing and the choreography for the fights and some of the sets were really everything I wanted and more. Just... the acting... and the dialogue... I wouldn't mind M. Night doing the next movie if there will be one, but I really hope he gets someone else to do the script and someone to co-direct with him and work the kids a little harder with their acting. Watching the movie in Japanese also kinda helped... the acting is so much better! XD

Sokka and Zuko are Nickelodeon
art by me

I love Avatar: The Last Airbender, so it's kind of odd that this is the first and only piece of fan art I've done for it. I think I'm still not over the fact that Zutara wasn't meant to be... ah well, I always push for the wrong couples :p

Oh I love it!! <3 That's exactly the mood that I wanted. <3 Thank you so much!! I absolutely love the butt squishing.

I thought the fights were good, but that was about it. And even the effects were sort of sub-par compared to something like the recent Harry Potter movies. And the writing was absolute shit. I feel like the biggest weakness of the movie (other than the gaping plot holes) was the lack of humor. Apparently Shymalan didn't "get it" and therefore didn't see the need to add it in. Someone else really should have written it. His directing wasn't horrible, though.

I thought the water effects were meh, but I loved the wind and fire effects, I think because the fire was actually fire for a lot of that. I watched the behind the scenes extras and was really impressed with how they did some of the stunt work and the non-CG effects. I hate CG effects, so that might be why I was more impressed to see the fire was sometimes real fire. The writing was AWFUL. There were times where he had subtle jokes for Sokka but the actor just didn't get that these were jokes and played it straight, and M. Night didn't feel like he needed to say "Oh, uh, that was supposed to be funny". I also find it weird that M. Night said he thought the fire nation should be Indian and the Earth Kingdom should be Asian. I always saw the Earthies being Middle Eastern and the Flamers as being SUPER DEFINITELY ASIAN. I warmed up to the guy who played Zuko, though.

I liked the atmosphere of the movie, and I liked some of the decisions he made as a director (going to Greenland for the opening scenes was really cool, trying to avoid CG when possible was nice) but I think he needs to work with someone on story and such because although Sixth Sense and Unbreakable and even Signs (in my opinion) had great dialogue and were well paced, he's not very good writing for any other kind of movie. The Happening was laughably bad, and my guess is it could have been better if someone early on had been there to say "Dude, this is a really stupid idea for a movie." I used to really love the guy, but it's pretty obvious he has good ideas but doesn't necessarily know what to do with them (people randomly killing themselves is cool, people killing themselves because the trees told them to die is silly). I think it's all because he did so well with his first three movies that people thought "Oh, he's unstoppable and doesn't need our help, he's a genius", and now we know he needs to just do one thing (direct maybe?) and not EVERYTHING.

(end rant)

And yay! Glad you liked it. I kept redoing it because I was like "No, I think she wants it less serious... I think they should be less sexy...". Oh, do you want me to link your story? I would be happy to if you want.

Ha ha yeah, I always saw the Fire Nation as being Japan, actually. And then the Earth Nation was China and/or Korea. But whatever-- Indian seems really far fetched. Not to mention that Sokka and Katara were the only white kids in a village full of Inuits. That was just.... ridiculous. BUT ENOUGH complaining from me.

Oh sure if you would like. It's up to you though. Thanks for offering!

Yes, I liked it lots!!

ahah I love their expressions x3 and their arms are so nicely sculpted ;A;

I always found AangxKatara really weird and Oedipus-ish. She always seemed like a mother figure to both Sokka and Aang (and Toph too) and then all of a sudden it got all weird and kissu D:

YES. Exactly. At first I thought "Katara and Aang are going to be together I guess" in the very very beginning, but by the 2nd season I thought "Oh, no way, she's like Aang's mommy". Aang is mentally 12 still, and Katara is 14 but extremely mature for her age, and at 14 I remember being attracted to my friends' big brothers, not my little brother's friends. I didn't get the whole Zutara thing either until I saw the episode where Zuko and Katara had to work together, and then he betrayed her and she was all "okay, I HATE that guy"... and then he became the good guy and she STILL didn't trust him... that was awesome. I was totally obsessed with the show during that period. I thought it would have been awesome if they got together, and that would have kind of united the world anyway if Prince Zuko married a girl from the water tribe, and then Aang kind of went off in search of airbending students or something... and I totally thought that was what was going to happen until like the very last episode, where everything was forced and rushed and weird. And the kiss was beyond awkward and gross, and Zuko randomly getting back together with Mai... I dunno. Bad writing, and it really brought down the whole series for me.

I think people who push the Aang relationship were big fans of Aang and just wanted to see him happy. I liked all the characters, but he wasn't my favorite. I think Sokka and Uncle Iroh were my favorites XD

I like Zutara too  I always go for the villain + good person pairing XD The Aang + Katara canon pairing at the end of the series felt extremely forced T_T Throughout the series, they were all happyfriend platoniclove stuff and then--- fwomp. :P Ah well.

Hooray for 100th deviation and final commission!! I never checked to see how many deviations I had XD;; I'm glad you went for the comical take, I think it works better 8D The other way has already been seen so many times *cough* It's almost stale.

YES. Yes it did. It felt VERY forced. They had this really nice, natural thing building up between Zuko and Katara, with a natural "Oh, Aang, I love you like a little brother" thing building up with Katara, and then at the end she's all "So how 'bout that kiss" and I'm like "WHAT." I know a lot of people were happy with that, but as a writer I was like "That doesn't make sense!"

Yeah, I was surprised by the amount of Zuko/Sokka art out there. Also surprised by the Sokka/Toph pairings... I just don't see Toph with many people, let alone Sokka Xp

I think the bad thing about it all, is that I LIKED the fact that Aang and Katara were friends and of the opposite sex. It was like "hey, we don't need to be a couple to like each other!" or whatever. D: Granted, I'm not one to talk (there is one pairing in one of my stories that I write them up as friends and am slowly considering making them into a couple at some point...only because they FIT with each other ;A; ) but still!

Toph is just too independent to care about anyone XD I still have to properly watch the last season or so (caught episodes once in a while, except for the season finale), but from what I can tell, she's just happy being with herself, if that makes sense :D

In my experience, it is REALLY hard for girls and guys to be friends, especially if one is attracted to the other. The only way it works is if the smitten person eventually falls for someone else. So I really liked that Aang liked her, but I liked when I thought she didn't like him because unrequited love is kind of unusual for heroes in American cartoons. I think it's a little more common in Japan for the main character to start out liking one girl and then switch to another girl, or to end up never getting with the girl he likes.

Yeah, no, Toph is cool by herself for a while. Actually, if I HAD to put her with anyone, I'd put her with Aang... I like how she teases him and calls him Twinkletoes. But Toph is young and tomboyish and doesn't seem to care about guys at the moment, and that's cool. That's what I liked about her ;D

Hmm, personally I've never had that problem. Well, correction: I've been able to be friends with guys just fine (because I am not pretty/thin/perfect normal girlfriend material :dummy: Not even geeks want me! XD; that and I get along better with guys than girls) but there was one time a few years back when a guy I got along with, we were talking before Russian class. His girlfriend (or his fiancee by that time, don't remember) arrived and after a couple of minutes of convo betwixt themselves, she started to either nip or kiss him on his ear/face/neck (I had no idea where, it looked weird from my angle). Maybe I was being extremely paranoid at the time, but I coulda sworn she was just doing it to "remind" me he's her bf! She just looked at me at some point with this look that back home usually meant "back the hell away from me" :XD: Again, I was probably paranoid, but knowing how sensitive some people are about their other even talking with people of the opposite sex (with good reason at times, with no reason at times)...yeah ^^; Also, yeah now that you mention it, it was strange/unique that an American cartoon would have the theme of unrequited love. Then again, Avatar: TLA is in part influenced by anime among other things, so maybe it's not that surprising.

Ditto ;D

For shows that have no clear beginning or end, or with a premise based on unrequited love (Johnny Bravo never got a girl, but that's because the show would have lost it's reason for being) the hero never seems to win, but the only animation with an ending that I can think of from America where the hero doesn't get the girl in the end is Hunchback of Notre Dame. Quasimodo gets his freedom but Esmeralda totally falls for Phoebus instead (not that I blame her).

Yeah, I think that girl was totally telling you to back off, haha. I have never acted like that, but I've read fan letters my boyfriend got or watched him talk to fans and it is kind of a weird feeling.
