I was hired to do the cover of a superhero novel by Matt Adams called I, Crimsonstreak
sometime in late December, and I took my time working on it because January had a big deadline and this wasn't due until March 1st. Well, by February I had most of the front done when the book's publisher told me they didn't like the direction the cover was going in... ruh-roh. I struggled to come up with something else short-notice, with another project riding my butt, and in three days I put together this totally different concept and it was fortunately accepted
And I made the deadline, which is amazing.
Crimsonstreak is a simple guy who is particular about his uniform ("it's crimson, not red!"), and I was asked to keep it simple and something like a speed skater would wear, and of course ALL CRIMSON. He even has those speed skater glasses/goggles instead of a true-to-form mask. Basically I tried to get that dorky old comic book look, like the old Batman covers where he's smiling and running toward the reader, and of course I mixed some Flash in there. For the pose I used this dude
as a reference.
The back image is actually what the original cover was going to look like, but I was told I was going way way too dark. I actually made another image for the back, but they went with the original cover image instead, haha. The back has a newspaper theme because the main character studied journalism and there are several newspaper references in the story. So you know, I thought it fit.
This book will be out in May, so if you want to see a cleaner version of the cover, buy the book!
Great for Marvel / DC fans who like their comedy with a hint of sarcastic silliness.
