Description

Well, I'm about to leave in an hour to go visit my in-laws for the New Year's celebrations in a small town in Ehime, Shikoku... but before I go, I wanted to post this. I made it earlier this month but thought I'd wait just in case I made some badass art right before the end of the year. I did not...

I didn't see the radical improvement I saw in 2010, but a lot of things happened to me personally this year that made this a year for personal growth. I started selling my comics and artwork, I caught the interest of a few companies who have since paid me for my work, I made a ton of new friends, and I got married in June! Big year for me. Oh yeah, and earthquakes and tsunamis aplenty.

As a side note, December is the first time I have ever been able to live solely off money from my art-- I paid my rent with money from commissions, both on and off DA, and I'm hoping this is a continuing trend. My only regret is that I didn't push myself to do comic events and freelance work earlier!

Here's 2010's improvement meme:

This year I went with a fun design by :iconcaramelcat123:, but I will probably go back and change the thing because I just realized there wasn't a place for my name... oops.

January:

Sadly, this is one of my favorite pieces of the year, and it was way back in January! I finally kind of figured out atsu-nuri painting styles on Photoshop and was thrilled with how this came out. But I am an idiot and never wrote down which brush I used, or bothered to keep track of how I did this... so I'm hoping in 2012 I will re-learn how to do this, since this is one of my personal favorites.

I liked this too! Another one featuring Boniface and my male cast, who finally got introduced in the novel I'm working on for FaLLEN. At the time they were still not very fleshed out (and in fact still aren't to a degree), so I had them drawn a little obscurely. Boniface is up front, and Julius is kind of peeking through his glasses. In 2012 I will probably draw bios for the other characters, starting with Boniface and Julius. Maybe chibis as well? I draw too many chibis these days...

March:

Okay, kind of a lackluster pick for my best of March. But guess what? One of the largest earthquakes in modern history took place, and I was a little too freaked out to do anything but panic and run away to the countryside for a while. But this pic of Vox ended up being a big sell as a charm, so that was nice :D

The title page for my manga, "Burn! FIRESHOT!!" in English. It got laughed at in the BAD way by Shounen Jump. So instead I sold this as an individual comic at Comitia, an event in Japan for original comics, and it did relatively well despite my being a no-name. In fact, an online company, Comic Shakeen! paid me to let them publish it on their website! So screw you, Jump!

Katsura from Gintama. Gintama is one of the few anime I watch and looove, and I keep meaning to read the manga as my husband owns every copy, but I have been so busy this year I haven't had a chance to read much manga. I tried the atsu-nuri style after almost half a year and pretty much failed -_-;;;

June:

Got married this month! So not a whole lot going artistically. Did do some chibi commissions, though :D

July:

This pic took me forever to do (and this is, in fact, not the finished version) and it really only looks good full-sized. Looking back I think I would have grouped everyone a little closer, but I was going for something that could be made into a poster. Ah well.

August:

Bleh. The story with this is I was running out of time and stressed out and had no idea how to do what I wanted to do, and I really hate this picture. The concept sketches were fantastic, but I kept changing my ideas as I was drawing and in the end it didn't turn out very good, plus the coloring was just a mess. I'd really like to do a dramatic picture of Arma in atsu-nuri painting style in 2012. Maybe that will get my atsu-nuri groove back.

I started posting stuff from my comic Jisatsu Soudan, or The Suicide Consultant as it will be in English. I had hoped to get this finished by December, but now I am way way behind. I did like the more adult way I drew this page compared to my bowling comic from earlier in the year.

October:

Art I did for a friend, kind of an art trade of her character Puck and his cute little furry animal thing. I loved that furry critter! I tried a few new techniques on this and this pic was a lot more popular than I expected it to be. I want that green fuzzball as a pet.

November:

Cerul is another gift art I did. I think he turned out pretty well, possibly because I had found a new brush I was absolutely in love with for inking. I like how I did his hair, so I might try doing more like this next year, too.

December:

Finally, this month I did a pic of Sailor Tin Nyanko and Sailor Iron Mouse. I really enjoyed drawing Iron Mouse, and for the preview pic here I turned her right-side-up. Though this year had more men than girls, which is a new trend, I ended the year on a semi-sexy girls pic, so that was fun.

Anyway, my husband is shouting at me to get my stuff together so we can eat and go to the airport. See you all in 2012!
